Boxer Patrick Day Remains in Coma after Knockout Loss

Haitian-American Boxer Patrick Day remained hospitalized as of Sunday morning following a knockout loss at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois.

Day was visibly stunned 1 minute 46 seconds into the final and 10th round when his opponent, Charles Conwell, who had been dominating the fight, bursted with energy landing two right hooks and a left.

ESPN reported that Day, who hails from Freeport, New York, had undergone emergency brain surgery and was in a coma. Medics tended to an unconscious Day in the ring, before he was removed on a stretcher, according to ESPN. On the way to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the athlete reportedly had a seizure.

Day is a role model for the kids in his hometown where he has been training since the age of 14. He was named the New York Daily News Golden Glove champion in 2012, and honored as a Sugar Ray Robinson Outstanding Athlete that year. He also became a USA Boxing national champion, and was an alternate for Team USA in the 2012 Olympic Games.
