Eel Export Tax Jumps from 42¢ to $16.00 per kg

A memorandum from the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR) dated August 12, 2019 stated that "from now on, the export costs of the eels are set at 1,500 gourdes ($15.77 [USD]) per kilogram." Before the note setting out new measures to regularize the operations and exports of river eels, exporters only paid the Haitian state 40 gourdes ($0.42) per kilogram.

"It is imperative for the Haitian state to collect taxes on the eel market that is very lucrative for exporters," said an MARNDR official speaking to the newspaper, Le Nouvelliste, by phone.

Eels are one of the main export commodities of Haiti. On the international market, the kilo sells up to $700.00 [USD] for its rarity. Haiti has an export capacity of 800 metric tons per year according to officials of the MARNDR.
