State Makes Emergency Payment of 10% of Debt to Fuel Distributors

Fuel distributors in Haiti have already received payments totaling $20 million [USD] from the government, finalized Friday, September 13, 2019. This payment amounts to one month of the subsidies put in place since June 2018 and less than 10% of the roughly $250 million owed.

With this payment, distributors in Haiti have ordered a total of about 300,000 barrels of gasoline and diesel fuels that are expected to arrive this week. The government had previously announced 500,000 barrels would be arriving during the period. Reality will prove considerably less.

The defacto Prime Minister Jean-Michel Lapin, along with the announcement of 500,000 barrels, said the price at gas pumps would rise. He did not give a date for the price hike but unionists have been warning that a price increase would not be tolerated.
