COCKBURN TOWN, Turks and Caicos Islands (sentinel.ht) – A rickety sloop carrying 53 Haitian nationals was intercepted before sunrise early Tuesday morning trying to enter Turks and Caicos Islands, according to that country’s Ministry of Border Control.
The boat was spotted around 2:30 am and by 4:ll am, as it arrived in Provo, TCI, it was met by a joint task force which included the TCI Coastal Radar, US Coast Guard, police, immigration and private citizens.
16 females and 37 males have been detained. The TCI Deputy Premier, Sean Astwood, said in a media release later that it has a serious commitment to stopping illegal migration. He said those being held would be repatriated and added to the country’s “stop list” which bars any future chance of them entering the TCI through legal means.
“…that illegal migration threatens the lives and livelihood of our people and that persons found to be engaged in the smuggling of humans would be prosecuted under the law. He advises all persons to observe the immigration laws of the Turks and Caicos Islands as anyone found in breach of same will be dealt with accordingly,” said Mr. Astwood.
