President condemns police-involved shooting of hurricane victim

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (sentinel.ht) – On Friday, the National Palace said it “condemned in the strongest terms” the shooting of a young hurricane victim during a food distribution operation in Les Cayes.

In a press note, the Presidency said it “believes that such incidents do not reflect the feeling of sharing and living together we know the Haitian people, nor the level of affliction of the people following the damage, destruction and still open scars left by the disaster in affected areas.”

It continued, “the Presidency condemns the attitude of certain individuals who have shown bad faith by trying repeatedly to loot and vandalize humanitarian aid convoys to the victims of Hurricane Matthew. In its concern to preserve public peace and respect for the lives and property of citizens, the Head of State urges law enforcers to show the greater sense of professionalism in the process of securing distribution ugly. It requires that steps be immediately taken by the police and judicial authorities to identify and punish according to the law the perpetrators of these reprehensible and wrongdoing.”
