Les Cayes: 10-year old killed during hurricane aid distribution

LES CAYES, Sud, HT (sentinel.ht) – A 10-year old at a food distribution was shot in the back and killed by police who opened fire on the crowd when the Hurricane Matthew victims in Les Cayes became restless.

The incident occurred Tuesday morning November 1, 2016. The population, affected by the passage of Hurricane Matthew, amassed at the port of the city to receive humanitarian aid from a boat.

The situation became unsettled within the crowd and agents of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), attempting to regain control of the situation, made use of their firearms.

The child was hit by a bullet and died on the spot. Three persons in total were killed in the incident. Protests broke out in the city as the child’s corpse was moved in a wheelbarrow.

The population, in expressed their indignation. They erected barricades with debris and burning tires in several streets of the metropolis of the South of Haiti. Vehicle traffic is currently paralyzed in Les Cayes.
