WASHINGTON, D.C. (sentinel.ht) – The Organization of American States (OAS) has tapped a former Uruguayan senator to head the organization’s Election Observation Mission for the presidential and legislative elections on October 9, 2016.

OAS-EOM Head, Juan Raul Ferreira, served as Senator of the Republic of Uruguay between 1985 and 1990 and was the county’s ambassador to Argentina between 1995 and 1999.

He holds a doctorate in economic relations and in international humanitarian law. He is currently the Director of the National Institution of Human Rights (NHRIs).

Ferreira has participated in more than a dozen electoral missions of the OAS.

The OAS has deployed 15 electoral observation missions in Haiti since 1990. It’s unprecedented participation in suggesting changes to election results in 2010 has kept it under criticism among Haitians.

The organization has, since 2014, accompanied the electoral process currently underway in Haiti.
