NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana, USA (sentinel.ht) – Essence introduced its first two expos during its annual festival this year and for its Money+Power Expo it kicked off this inaugural expo with host, Haitian-American Entrepreneur, Karen Civil.
Karen has experience in the music, fashion and lifestyle industry but used her presence among the attendees of the Money+Power Expo to bring heightened attention to Haiti and its distinctive fashion industry.
Indeed there has been a boom in the Haitian fashion industry. Since 2010, the country has held an annual Haiti Fashion Week and for the first time in two decades, sent a contestant to the Miss Universe Pageant, as well as many other pageants, every year.
There have also been major Haitian designers reaching the pinnacle of houses, from Milan, with Stella Jean, and New York with, Kerby Jean-Raymond. There are many, many more. A few here.
Miss Civil told the crowd in New Orleans, “listen, let’s appreciate the fact that people are starting to take notice. There are so many things coming out of Haiti right now. I love it. It’s helping our economy grow and it’s shedding a light on an area that wasn’t there. It’s so needed. It’s bringing work opportunities for women in those communities. So, I’m here for it. Even when I went back, everything that I wore were created by Haitian designers. We’re everywhere.”
