ORLANDO, Florida, USA (sentinel.ht) – Haiti became the first team eliminated from the tournament round of the Copa America Centenario after a 7-1 loss against five-time World Cup Champion, Brazil.
Brazilian defender Marquinho challenged his teammates to put on a clinic against Haiti. Corruption and the sting of the 7-1 loss to Germany two years at the World Cup semi-finals, in Brazil mind you, and a poor start in the Centenario, made for a team wanting to prove something.
Couldn’t take anything away from Brazil’s rout but the Haitian team did seem star struck and expecting the worse. Coach Neveu employed the highly cautious and defense-oriented 5-3-2 formation against a team without its best striker, Neymar Jr., and best defender, Thiago Silva.
Most attacks by The Grenadiers were individual displays of speed, talent and particularly strength, where Haiti seems to have a monopoly in soccer, but regardless, lack of communication and team work, match with prevention defense, was not a good strategy against a reeling Selecao.
Philippe Coutinho shot with accuracy and speed, beating four Haitian defender and the goalie for Brazil’s first of three unanswered points before the half. He would finish with a hat trick with an overtime sniper shot to the top far post.
The biggest reaction from the crowd of about 29,000 came when Haiti scored its lone goal in the 70th minute. It was the first time the island nation had scored in 3 meetings against the Brazilians (4-0 in 1974 and 6-0 in 2006).
