Haiti loses tough 0-1 to Peru, Copa America Group B

SEATTLE, Washington, USA ( – Haiti made a game of its first group play match of the 2016 Copa America Centenario, Saturday, but couldn’t equalize the 0-1 deficit to Peru in the closing minutes.

Along with a draw between Brazil and Ecuador in the later game, Les Grenadiers are in a tough spot and will have to come from the bottom of Group B to advance into the elimination round.

Peruvian forward Paolo Guerrero hit a diving header that came bending across from Edison Flores which ended the 61 minutes of deadlock. Haitians continued to fight.

The Grenadiers had plenty opportunities early and one beauty of a chance in the 94th minute. Kervens Belfort came of a break and nudged a wide-open header six years from the goal, past the near post. He broke down crying as the final whistle blew.

More Group B play came after when Brazil and Ecuador met in Pasadena. That match up ended in a tie which means Haiti is alone at the bottom of the group and surprisingly, Peru is on top.

Haiti faces Brazil on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 in Orlando, Florida and then will head to East Rutherford, New Jersey where it will play Ecuador on June 12, 2016.
